More news on Broad Peak summits
(K2Climb.net) Nearly 40 climbers summited Broad Peak yesterday, in spite of high winds, according to teams on the spot.
Marco Confortola: Everybody back in BC – safe, sound… and showered!
"The guys are back in BC......safe and showered," Marco's brother Luigi told ExplorersWeb.
After already summiting Cho Oyu, Shisha Pangma and Broad Peak in 2007 alone, Marco is done with the Himalayas for the rest of the year. However, his sights are set on a peak he's kept his eye on the whole time during his ascent on Broad: "Next year, Marco is going for K2," Luigi said.
Czech K2 and Broad Peak Expedition: Czechs on Top
Sulovski's team has reported from K2's BC on fellow Czech climbers Zdenìk Hrubý (previously teaming up with Radek Jaros), Pavol Lupták and Radim Slíva summiting Broad Peak yesterday.
Al Filo team: Ferran and Asier on top too – Marron flies from C2
In addition to Ivan and Edurne, Ferran Latorre, Asier Izaguirre and high altitude porter Hassan summited Broad Peak as well yesterday.
Esther Sabadell, Valen Giró and Juanjo Garra were not acclimatized enough for a summit bid, so they returned to BC from C3, with hopes of going up again as soon as weather conditions permit. Porter Madhi started the summit bid with Edurne's group, but eventually retreated due to bitter cold.
The summit group got back to C3 last night, dehydrated and exhausted after a 19-hour journey in tough conditions. They are expected back in BC today.
Team member 'Marron' had climbed with the team up to C2, but didn't go further. Instead he paraglided back to BC from that point.
Santiago Quintero: Cumbre!
Ivan Vallejo was not the only Ecuadorian climber to summit Broad Peak yesterday. Santiago Quintero, teaming up with Carlos Pauner, topped out as well. Santiago is climbing despite having lost all his toes to frostbite on a previous Aconcagua expedition. His main goal, planned for 2008, is K2.
Simone La Terra: Broad Peak check – three more to go!
Much like Jean Troillet's team, Italian Simone La Terra aims for all Karakorum's 8,000ers. While Troillet and Co. are still approaching the Baltoro Valley (read more in a separate story on K2Climb.net today), Simone has already crossed off one peak from the list: Sharing a permit with Giuseppe Pompili's expedition, he summited Broad Peak yesterday. Now Simone is moving to K2, and afterward he still plans on attempting both Gasherbrums.
Georg Kronthaler: Nearly 40 summits
Austrian Georg Kronthaler, currently in C3 and getting ready to retrieve the remains of his brother Marcus (who perished near Broad's foresummit last year), has reported on nearly 40 people summiting yesterday. "We watched them walk in line toward the summit ridge," Georg Said.
