Silvio Mondinelli summits Broad Peak, his 14th 8000m peak
Mondinelli has summited Broad Peak and all fourteen 8000m peaks: in doing so he has become the second Italian to climb the worlds highest mountains without the use of supplementary oxygen. The ascent and descent were carried out in a storm.
News flash: at circa 12.30 local time Silvio Mondinelli reached the summit of Broad Peak (8047m), the final summit missing from the magic 14 highest mountains in the world.

As usual Mondinelli climbed without supplementary oxygen and in doing so he became the second Italian - after Reinhold Messner of course - to have climbed all fourteen 8000m peaks without the use of supplementary oxygen.

Mondinelli reached the summit together with Fabio Iacchini (1st 8000m peak), Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner (10th 8000m peak), Spaniards Ivan Vallejo (13th 8000m peak) and Edurne Pasaban (9th 8000m peak) and Ralf Dujmovits from Germany. All are currently engaged in the difficult descent back to Camp 3 through a raging storm.

Mondinelli's site reports that he left Camp 3 at 7000m at midnight and reached the summit after circa 13 hours. The mountaineers battled hard first breaking trail through deep snow and then against the storm which raged up to the summit and is still in process.

At present there are numerous mountaineers still out on the mountain, and it is possible that more details will become available in the next couple of hours. What is certain is that weather conditions are extremely difficult... Those who summited today, together with Mondinelli, must now descend safely to base camp before celebrating!
